The Town Hall was first mentioned in 1316. The building was expanded many times in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Kraków’s Town Hall survived in its full form until 1820, when most of it was demolished and only the tower was preserved. Soaring over 70 metres over the Main Market Square, the tower boasts several historic interiors. The ground floor, which once housed the treasury, now displays unique gmerki: 15th-century stonemasons’ marks. On the upper floors, visitors can see representative Gothic halls with exhibitions of architectural details, and the third floor offers a splendid panoramic view of Kraków.

Beneath the tower stretch the Town Hall cellars, including the famous Świdnicka Cellar, once an important place for the beer and wine trade. In the past, the underground spaces also included prison cells and a torture chamber. Today, they are used for cultural and gastronomic purposes.
