The Archaeological Museum in Kraków is one of the largest specialised institutions of its kind in this part of Europe and ranks among the oldest in the world. It was founded in 1850 and, throughout its long history, has accumulated an extensive collection of approximately 800,000 arte facts of great scientific and exhibition value. The collection is comprised of donations from explorers and collectors, primarily materials from archaeological research.
The Museum conducts ongoing research, acquires, preserves, and shares its collections through exhibitions and publications. In 2026, due to the implementation of the "Former Monastery - Former Prison - Modern Museum" investment project, which involves the modernization of the exhibition area and the entrance area on Poselska Street, the Museum will only offer one permanent exhibition, "Prehistory and the Middle Ages of Małopolska." The remaining exhibitions and the garden will be unavailable.
The Museum offers a wide range of educational activities and workshops for children, youth, and adults, and also presents temporary exhibitions.
