The Old Synagogue in Kraków is the oldest surviving synagogue in Poland. It was built in the 15th century in the Gothic style. In 1570, it was rebuilt by Matteo Gucci, who gave it a Renaissance appearance while preserving its original layout and vaulting. In the 16th and 17th centuries, additional rooms were added, and the synagogue became the religious and administrative centre for the Jewish community in Kazimierz.

Early in the 20th century, the building was restored several times. During the Second World War, it was taken over by the Germans who destroyed its furnishings. In 1944, the vault collapsed. After the war, the synagogue was rebuilt in 1956 –59. The museum established there collects objects connected with Jewish history and culture, especially the history of Kraków’s Jewish community. It also organises exhibitions and educational activities.
